Parts of Speech (POS)

You remember the eight parts of speech, right?  Can you name all eight?  Can you define each of them?  Now...can you tell me how they function together?  How knowing all these answers can help you become a better speaker, reader, and writer?

The POS unit in 7th grade language arts is designed to first review the 8 POS and then to develop your understanding of the function of words in the English language.  Once you grasp how words function in your own language, you can start to manipulate them to develop your style in writing and speaking, you can understand more complex texts, and you can more easily learn a foreign language.  Whew!  That's a lot of development!

Learning the nuances of the parts of speech isn't easy for everyone, so be prepared for some hard work, and possibly some frustration along the way.  Keep in mind that there are solid reasons for keeping at it, even when it seems impossible.  Often, repetition is the key to catching on, so we'll take regular 4-point quizzes throughout the year to keep in practice.  For each quiz, you will label the POS of every word in each of two sentences.

Check out the following links for ways to study or practice the POS.  (If you need log-in directions for the StudyBlue site, let me know.)  If you have a smartphone or tablet, remember you can download apps to help you, too.  The ones we sometimes use in class are MadLibs, WordVenture, BrainPop, Grammaropolis, and StudyBlue.  If you need more help or practice, let me know!
