Writing Process (WP)

 

In 7th grade, we take our writing seriously!

 

This year, you will learn a six-step process of writing, a tried and true process that will definitely improve your writing skills. Several of the steps in the PTMS WP will be familiar to you, but we will incorporate steps for feedback and review that you might be encountering for the first time.

 

Two of your writing goals this year will be to become an effective writing partner and to become more independent.  What?! How can you possibly do both?  I will expect you to work independently on several steps of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing.  I want to see you dig deep to come up with ideas for your writing, and then develop your skills by composing your own drafts.  You'll learn to make decisions about what to include in your writing, then learn to find and correct your own mistakes--two skills you will need for the rest of your academic career, and possibly the rest of your life!  But at the same time, another great lesson to learn is that writing is not done in a vacuum; we need the support of others to produce our best work.  So while you will do much of your writing on your own, you will also learn to give and accept constructive feedback, to ask for second opinions on content and conventions, and to offer your expertise to others, too. 

 

This is the year to break out on your own.  Be confident!  You can do it!  And I'll be here if you need some assistance.  As we work through the unit, let me know if you have questions, and check back here for links to handouts and other helpers.

 

 

 

 

 

As we go through the year, whether in language arts or in another class, if you need extra help with your writing, there are several resources you can use.  Remember that you can always see me in study hall or before school, but also keep in mind that you can get a pass from me to go to the Writing Lab during your study hall.  And BrainPop has lots of great videos about the different aspects of writing.  Check it out!
